  • The omicron variants emerged from many mutations of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

  • Where & When: It was first identified in South Africa on November 24.

  • Spread: Omicron is more contagious and can spread more easily than other variants.

    • Omicron spread twice as fast in South Africa than with the delta variant.

    • Omicron is the fastest spreading variant with daily cases higher than the Delta variant’s peak.

  • Severity of the illness: Omicron seems to be less severe; studies have shown that the hospitalization rate is not as high as the infection rate. However, the large number of cases occurring in a short period of time can offset this attribute. Furthermore, the variant is able to evade immunity conferred by past infection or vaccination.

Vaccine effectiveness

  • A study by the Africa Health Research Institute shows that the antibodies produced in people are unfortunately not as effective against the variants as with other variants. However, boosters are significantly effective in blocking Omicron.

  • What to know: the vaccine still shows some protection against the severe illness produced by COVID-19.

  • Remember, 6 months and up are eligible for their vaccine, and 16 and older are eligible for booster shots.

Safety Suggestions

  1. Have people ages 6 months + get their vaccine and 16+ for their booster shot.

  2. Get tested before traveling, after 3-5 days after.

  3. Wear a mask indoors or at gatherings.

  4. Be cautious around the elderly and immunocompromised before interactions with them.

Note that these precautions depend on the severity of cases in your location and your personal judgment!
